Citi’s global head of banking sanctions compliance, Jonathan Burke, has been nominated to serve as the Treasury Department’s assistant secretary for terrorist financing.

Burke is a Treasury alum. He worked as a senior policy adviser for global affairs in the Treasury Department’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence from 2008 to 2012, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He joined Citi in 2019, working as the chief sanctions officer for the U.K. before serving in the same role across the bank’s Europe, Middle East and Africa footprint.

Burke began in his current role in December 2023, according to LinkedIn.

“We congratulate Jonathan on the nomination and support his decision to return to public service,” a Citi spokesperson said in a statement. “Jonathan is a leading sanctions and financial crimes expert and has contributed greatly to strengthening Citi’s compliance and risk management efforts during his tenure.”

Prior to Citi, Burke worked at Ernst & Young as a senior manager in financial services risk management.
